Purpose: A gastroscope is used to see the esophagus (swallowing tube), stomach, and part of the small intestines (duodenum). Ahollow channel throughout its entire length enables the doctor to diagnose and treat certain conditions.

Usage: The patient will be sprayed with anesthesia to numb the back of the throat and given medications to help him relax. After the patient has relaxed the doctor will slowly insert the gastroscope into the mouth and down into the stomach and intestines.

Portable: NA

Parts:

  • Camera
  • Fibre-optics tube

The gastroscope is fitted with a camera at its tip and with a light source at the other end. It also utilizes the technology of fibre-optics to visualize otherwise unaccessable areas. Fibre-optics are able to reflect light and thus, rays of light can reach the end of the gastroscope to the stomach or intestine. The camera can pick up reflected light and transmit the pictures onto a television which the doctors can see and study the patient's body parts. A picture of the stomach is shown above.

  • It is used to evaluate a patient suspected of bleeding from the stomach or intestines. Patients can be treated without undergoing surgery
  • Fast procedure, with minimal pain

  • Possible perforation of the esophagus, stomach, or small intestines
  • Vomiting, and side effects may be experience from the sedation given for the esophagogastrodoudenoscopy
