A Continuous Passive Motion Machine (CPM) is used as part of the surgical recovery process. While a patient stays stationary, the CPM unit works by flexing and extending the patient's body part without using the patient's muscles. This prevents the joints of the patient from becoming stiff during recovery.

The CPM works by using movable shafts powered by electric motors. In the newer units, electronic controls allow the patients to vary the frequency and extent of motion by changing various settings.

  • Blood flow is increased to the affected joint
  • Increased blood brings nutrition and oxygen to the joints
  • Helps to reduce swelling
  • Reduce post operative blood clots and prevent scar tissues from forming
