Working with radio wave energy pulses, the MRI scanner can identify minute areas of tissue inside the body to gradually build up a 2- or 3-D map of these tissue types. The power of MRI comes from its ability to tailor scanning parameters to differentiate various body tissues, and being able to show images of flowing blood in almost every part of the body. MRI image contrast functions by changing the magnetic fields in the tissues being examined. Normal and abnormal tissue respond in different ways to the alteration and produce differing signals that are transferred to the images, allowing the radiologist to check for tissue abnormalities and disease processes.
