Osmometer

Purpose: Clinically, an osmometer is used to measure the osmotic pressure of body fluids. The osmotic pressure should corresponds to the standard pressure of humans, if not, treatment will need to be carried out.

Usage: A sample of body fluid is extracted from the body and transferred into the Osmometer.

Portable: Yes

Parts:

  • Partially permeable membrane
  • Calibrator

Osmotic pressure is the pressure required to prevent the movement of a water from a region of lower water concentration to a region of higher water concentration across a partially permeable membrane. The concentration of a solution affects its osmotic pressure, freezing point, and other physiochemical properties. Osmometers determine osmotic pressure by methods such as the measurement of the freezing point. Measurements obtained by this device are used in the diagnosis and treatment of body fluid disorders.

  • Measurement of osmotic pressure is fast and only a small amount of sample is required
  • Clinicians can make more timely diagnoses and institute more appropriate patient care which can translate to decreased health care cost
  • Direct measurement of body fluid osmolality, providing essential information which cannot be provided by other mean

  • It is difficult to detect membrane asymmetrical or leakage which will affect the value of the osmotic pressure found
