Purpose: Used to alarm the cessation of breathing timed from the last detected breath. It can also monitor heart rate and other physiological parameters linked to the presence or absence of adequate respiration.

Usage: After a mini sensor is strapped onto the patient’s chest, the LED will flash to give indications of the respiration rhythm as the patient breathes. When the Apnea period exceeds the preset value, an audio-visual alarm is given.

Portable: Yes (depending on model)

Parts:

  • Sensors
  • Monitors

The Apnea Monitor operates by detecting a small electrical signal generated by applying pressure to a piezoelectric crystal transducer. The monitor will try to detect a rhythmic breathing pattern by automatically locks onto the breathing signal by slowly becoming more sensitive. The voltage is amplified until a breathing signal is obtained. If large pressures are suddenly placed on the sensors, the monitor will immediately become less sensitive and try to lock onto these movements. After the patient has settled down, the unit will once again automatically lock onto the more sensitive breathing signals. The signals are set to a series of single beeps for a certain number of times as the first warning. Then they proceed to double beeps and then triple beeps. This alerts you as to how long the machine has been going off in case you were out of hearing distance briefly.

  • No actual voltage is applied to the sensor, thus the possibility of electrical shock is zero
  • This machine can be used for both infants and adults alike.
  • Lives of many are saved with the use of the Apnea Monitor (especially for premature babies)

  • Sound produced may be irritating or even ear-piercing
