Purpose: Diagnose and treat problems of the Joint

Usage: A small incision is made and the arthroscope is inserted to view the joint

Portable: Yes

Parts of Machine:

  • Light Source – Used to brighten the interior of the joint to improve visibility
  • Lens – Used to magnify the interior
Camera – Allows the surgeon to view the interior
  • Fiber Optics – Transmits the light from the end inserted into the joint to the other end of the arthroscope connected to the camera

A small cut is made and the end of the arthroscope with the light source and lens is inserted in. The light source brightens up the interior and the image is magnified by the lens. The image is then transmitted via the fiber optics to the other end of the arthroscope. A miniature camera is connected to the other end of the arthroscope and the surgeon is able to view the joint. Various arthroscopic instruments can then be used to treat the joint.

  • Less invasive than major surgery
  • Less likelihood of complications than major surgery
  • After the surgery, little or no pain medications is needed
  • Recovery time is usually less and patients can be discharged in a few hours

  • Use of arthroscopy is limited and standard surgery may be needed if arthroscopy is inadequate
  • Complications such as instrument breakage and infections may occur
