Purpose: It is used to view the airways of the lung (tracheobronchial tree). It can also be used to collect lung secretions and lung tissue for biopsy.

Usage: After anesthesia is sprayed on the back of the throat, a scope will be inserted through the nostril until it passes through the throat into the trachea and bronchi.

Portable: Yes (depending on model)

Parts:

  • Small camera
  • Fibre opics light source

A bronchoscope has a fiberoptic light source and carrier to provide illumination. The device is made of materials such as stainless steel or flexible plastic. The bronchoscope has a flexible tip that allows the operator to explore smaller passages precisely. A small channel within the bronchoscope permits insertion of fine forceps for biopsy.

The camera at the tip of the bronchoscope will show everything live on the television where the patient can see the interior of his/her lungs.

Should there be anything that looks suspicious, an instrument will be inserted through the bronchoscope to extract some samples.

  • Clear and high quality pictures can be taken
  • Patients can be awake, relaxed and understand their medical situation
  • Convenient---specimens of lung tissues can be taken easily or operation be done with the aid of the bronchoscope

  • Patient must cooperate with the doctors. If patient becomes anxious and moves too much, he may suffer from airway trauma

  • A fibre-optic bronchoscope
  • Rigid bronchoscope
