This is the birthplace of Singapore archaeology. Over ten days in January 1984, the first archaeological investigation conducted on Singapore island proper occurred. This initial excavation sought to examine early legends pertaining to the founding myths of Singapore where the ‘ancient kings’ were rumored to have been buried on the ‘hill of Singapura’. While the alleged graves were not discovered, archaeologists did find ample evidence of pre-colonial occupation dating to the 14th century. Over the years, archaeologists revisited the hill sporadically conducting small-scale digs. One of the most interesting discoveries was the site of a glass-making workshop from the pre-modern period, where craftsmen recycled glass to make into beads and bangles. Since then, archaeologists have extended the knowledge of pre-colonial Singapore to include the plains and northern bank of the Singapore River.
