The Cathedral of the Good Shepherd

Development plans once again prompted a brief archaeological evaluation in downtown Singapore, this time at the site of the Cathedral of Good Shepherd. In May 2013, a small team excavated four trial trenches within the rear garden of the Rectory Building, where a new four-storey building will be constructed. The crew uncovered what were possibly the remains of the old convict prison with traces of brickwork and plaster flooring. Between 1825 and 1875 convicts from South Asia were shipped from India to work as laborers, and the Bras Basah vicinity was one of the largest convict stations in the Far East.
