St Andrew's Cathedral

The construction of an underground auditorium complex provided the opportunity to investigate a site that had seen little disturbances since the mid-19th century. Beneath the manicured lawns of the church World War Two, colonial period, and pre-modern deposits were uncovered. Approximately one ton of artifacts were recovered from the construction impact zone. The excavation found ammunition and military supplies during the Battle for Singapore in February 1942 when the church was used as an emergency field hospital. The pre-colonial stratum yielded large amounts of imported ceramics, amongst were several intact Fujian stoneware jars and bottles.
